It should be remembered that January in New Zealand is the
height of summer. Flights are popular and should be booked well in advance!
For participants traveling from Australia, it is usually
necessary to transit via Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. However there
are (very limited) DIRECT international flights into Queenstown - early booking
advised. For example, the following are direct Air New Zealand or Pacific Blue
flights for players departing from Sydney: 14th January (Saturday),
Sydney-Queenstown, 10:05am depart, arrive 3:00pm 25th January (Wednesday),
Queenstown-Sydney, 5:15pm depart, arrive 6:40pm
For participants traveling from Europe, we strongly
recommend booking around 9 months ahead to get the best choice of prices and
routes. Generally your international flight will land in Auckland or
Christchurch. From Europe it is possible to go various different ways around
the world - via USA or via Asia - to reach New Zealand. Our preference is via
Singapore or Kuala Lumpa, but many of the Asian stopovers can be recommended.
The main international airport in New Zealand is Auckland, and domestic flights
to Queenstown from there take around 1.5 hours (assuming you are not
sightseeing other parts of New Zealand by traveling overland).
For any participants traveling from or via the UK, an
excellent firm specialising in long-haul travel is Trailfinders, whose main
office is situated at 194 Kensington High Street, London (tel 020-7938 3939).
